BELT RANK PHILOSOPHY
Belt rank represents progress in skill, understanding, responsibility, and character.
Belts are not rewards for time served — they reflect readiness to carry greater expectations on and off the mat.
Blue Belt — Foundation & Survival
Blue Belt represents understanding the fundamentals of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. At this level, students focus on safety, positional awareness, and defense.
A Blue Belt can:
• Survive bad positions
• Escape danger and regain structure
• Maintain posture and base
• Apply basic offense responsibly
• Explain why techniques work
The emphasis at Blue Belt is durability and understanding, not dominance.
Purple Belt — Connection & Problem Solving
Purple Belt represents the ability to connect techniques and adapt under pressure. At this level, students begin chaining attacks, anticipating reactions, and solving problems when plans fail.
A Purple Belt:
• Understands cause and effect
• Transitions fluidly between positions
• Adjusts strategy in real time
• Applies techniques dynamically against resistance
Purple Belt marks the transition from learning techniques to using Jiu-Jitsu intentionally.
Brown Belt — Ownership & Refinement
Brown Belt represents ownership of a personal game. At this level, students refine an A-game, make intentional decisions, and apply Jiu-Jitsu calmly and efficiently under pressure.
A Brown Belt:
• Relies on well-developed systems rather than isolated techniques
• Makes strategic choices based on context and opponent
• Demonstrates composure, efficiency, and control
• Understands when to advance, disengage, or change tactics
The focus at Brown Belt is refinement, not accumulation.
Black Belt — Responsibility, Mastery & Contribution
Black Belt represents mastery of principles, responsibility for others, and contribution to the art. It is not the end of the journey, but the point at which a practitioner becomes a guardian of Jiu-Jitsu within the academy and the wider community.
A Black Belt demonstrates:
• Deep understanding of core principles across all phases of Jiu-Jitsu
• Intentional, efficient application of technique
• Adaptability across gi, no-gi, sport, self-defense, and MMA contexts
• Sound judgment under pressure
A Black Belt:
• Owns interconnected systems and can explain cause and effect
• Teaches effectively at all levels
• Leads by example in safety, discipline, and conduct
• Protects academy culture and standards
• Exercises restraint and understands legal and ethical responsibility
Black Belt is not ownership of Jiu-Jitsu — it is stewardship.
Belts Are Not Just Technical
Promotion is based on:
• Skill and understanding
• Attitude and consistency
• Safety and control
• Leadership and character
Higher belts carry greater responsibility on and off the mat.
The Goal
Belts are markers of progress, not destinations.
Train with purpose.
Support your teammates.
Represent the academy with integrity.
The journey continues — at every rank.
